about

With songs written as early as 2004, it would be an understatement to say that the debut album from Birmingham-based Bob Marston & the Credible Sources has been a long time in the making which makes the title, So Long, completely appropriate. For fans of the long traveled troubadour, it will be well worth the wait as the album is a culmination of years of writing songs and developing them through live performance. The sound can best be described, broadly, as Americana but covers stylistic ground from old school R&B to reggae, from classic country to hard rock, with songs ultimately coming across as some form of roots rock. Lyrically, the songs fall into two categories: love songs and social justice anthems. The love songs cover a variety of topics from heart felt and at times messy attempts to salvage a relationship plagued by the challenges of distance and the music industry, processing of a break up, and a patient plea for reconciliation to more straightforward expressions of unconditional devotion and lamentations of romantic deceit. The social justice songs tell stories that convey questions and commentary on issues of social injustice and an honest exploration and understanding of society and our history. The common thread is striving for and finding humanity in ourselves, in our friends and lovers, in the strangers that could soon become either friends or lovers or stay forever a nameless face in the crowd, and in our communities and society as a whole. The best part of this album is that whether you’re wanting a danceable song with a catchy chorus to use as the soundtrack of your summer or needing a caring hand to comfort you through the depths of loss, heartache, and the realization that sometimes the world we live in is not quite the place it’s made out to be, you will find what you’re looking for in So Long.
